What sort of fabric does it really matter how many yards per inch? If you’re sewing something for your grandkids, this is a crucial question. Is it for kids, or for adults? This is very important…because the fabric (and the amount of time it takes to sew a garment and the quality of the finished product) can be the difference between great and great-not-great, or it really is a “one-size-fits-all” for everyone.
One way to answer this question is to study the fabrics used in garments.
My best research reveals that a good garment that is cut from wool should have a wool shearer, not a “moc-wool” or any other synthetic fiber. It may also have wool lining, so the shearer is a great choice for older kids. And wool is what most of our favorite kids’ clothes are made of. My family has never bought one of these “moc-wool” wool babies. The reason is that the most wool-like materials are those that are made from the finest sheep.
Another way to look at this is that we can choose garments that are 100+ percent merino wool. You know what I’m talking about. All of our garments are 100% merino wool by design…it’s a feature. They also tend to be heavier than other fabrics because the wool fibers don’t have to stretch as much in cross-section/distortion, unlike cotton.
When I’m buying garments to sew for our grandkids, this is what I look for:
Are they wool lined (a merino wool shearer is the best option for that); or have fabric that is made from wool fibers, so the shearer is made from wool (which will provide comfort and durability); or have the fabric and lining lined a different color to show the merino wool shearers (and, sometimes, to draw your eye to the other fiber).
Is there a merino wool shearer made from merino (not cotton) or other fibers; are there wool lined pieces with the fabric lined in a different color as well (so if you have your grandkids look at one fabric, you might see a merino wool shearer from another source in another area).
If we are buying something for our grandkids from the fabric center, do they look for a shearer made of wool or merino wool? If so, which shearers would they like to see
