It depends on many factors such as the size of the operation, the type of work you’re doing and your equipment. If you’re just running a cabinet or router table business, you should be able to make enough money to live comfortably! But if you’re in a larger kitchen or home improvement business, you might not be able to make it as a full-time job.
When you have to start making a living, the goal starts there. It takes some work to get the equipment you need to build a custom build, but once you do start, you can make money and then spend it. The amount you end up making depends on the skills you have, where you want to buy, where you live, what you build and how much you charge. If you have skills, a good foundation to start off with and good equipment to build the project, the work can be quick and easy. If you need a lot of help to get started, there may not be enough available. Even if the equipment isn’t necessary, it doesn’t hurt to have some handy to have.
You can start small, but keep coming back to the same places for help, and eventually you’ll have a good home shop and a good work force.
Here are some tips that can save you money while you’re building your dream home:
Buy a good workbench and a nice planer, then use those to build the table you want to make.
Have a table saw that can cut any wood you desire. You might need a small bit of a woodworker’s grade plywood for the front of the table, or you can choose a planer that will slice out 1-1/8″ at 45 degrees to fit into the back of the table after you put up the table top.
Buy the biggest table you can get. It’s easier to work on a large table than it is to cut out small boards that are very difficult to work with. You’ll have a good working space for all of the tools and materials needed to make your table.
Get a table saw for a cabinet or toaster table, and if you’re using a jigsaw, buy a set with a table and drawer and a cutting mat for the cutters.
Have plenty of time because it’s a lot of work to build one piece of furniture. Build a first stage bench with a table for your work area and then add benches for your clients.
