The federal government is seeking to build a small air bridge across Canada’s northernmost island to help keep out the blizzard that could bring ice storm damage to Quebec and the rest of the country.

The government wants to build a new four-lane road crossing from the Yukon and the Northwest Territories to the far north through the Chihuahuan desert. The new bridge would be about three football fields long.

The air bridge would be funded by highway and bridge spending and would be under federal control from the U.S.

The air bridge would allow cars that could not drive directly onto the island to fly between the two ports on the Yukon River, the island and the Chihuahuan Desert.

The government estimates the air bridge would save about four hours of driving each way.

The government says it would cost $1 million, but it declined further interviews and sent a written statement instead.

It would mean many more Canadians, especially those in Quebec, who work in the Canadian Arctic, would be able to easily come home to the mainland.

“We are looking at this project very carefully,” Transport Canada spokeswoman Claire Levasseur told the Calgary Herald.

“We are not looking to open up that way of travel entirely. That would be a very expensive and complex undertaking, but we are very serious about trying to mitigate this risk.”

Culture and Tourism Minister Ed Fast said Friday the air bridge would be welcome news as far north as Alberta and Saskatchewan.

“This would have an immediate benefit to many people in the Canadian territory of Nunavut or the Yukon or the Northern Territory,” he said.

“There are some 2,000 people living in that territory and if they were able to cross the river
