That’s why many experts recommend a range of diets. “It’s a really important thing for people to remember. The goal isn’t to lose weight. The goal is not an all-out diet. It’s to maintain weight loss. And the goal isn’t to become obese. The goal is just to lose the weight,” Dr. Rippe says.
That said, for the average person — that is, people who are not obese — a diet that’s high in salt, fat, saturated fat, and refined carbohydrates is a bad idea. For example, if the average fat in a sandwich is 40 grams, and that person eats a slice of ham or bacon, they would likely gain weight.
“If you have your meal at 5 a.m. every day, and you’re on a low-salt diet, you’re going to lose weight,” Dr. Rippe says.
If you have a high-salt diet, you might think you’re losing weight when you actually lose weight. But, if, say, your meal contains 12 grams of fat and one gram of sugar, you’re already gaining weight. Dr. Rippe recommends cutting down on your calories and eating enough protein to maintain muscle mass to maintain weight loss.
