The standard advice was to aim for a weight loss diet of 1500 calories.
However, recent dietary advice has been to aim for a weight loss diet of 5000 calories a day.
Is a diet that low an acceptable standard?
As I explained earlier, any food that makes us fat is in some way ‘dangerous’.
In my new book (which you can buy from me) I explain that eating fewer than 3000 calories a day will have a negative impact on our health and our ability to lose weight.
So if you eat that many calories a day, and we know that it can be damaging, then we can accept that as a valid outcome.
If eating less than 3000 calories a day will do your body harm without being harmful to you, then we may consider that a valid outcome as well.
My weight loss advice is that you should aim for a weight loss diet of 6000 calories a day, a bit higher than the 2000 calorie range I use.
Why do I need a low calorie diet?
The reason why we should aim for a diet of 6000 calories a day is we are already eating 4000 calories a day.
As we know, we are taking in more calories than the whole weight loss diet of 2000 calories will take out.
Therefore, if we simply ate just 2000 calories as we would normally, we’d probably not be losing any weight at all.
In fact, because we now take in more calories than the whole diet of 2000 calories would take out, we should be gaining weight at a faster rate.
Also, a more realistic diet than 2000 calories would also mean that the calories contained in the extra food will increase.
Some foods do provide some additional calories when cooked, such as nuts.
However, this does not mean that eating them has a negative impact on our health.
It is simply that they provide some additional calories without changing the amounts of calories taken out of the diet.
However, eating any higher than that will not reduce the number of calories we will take out.
My current advice is that you should aim for a diet of 6000 calories a day.

You are currently taking in 4000 calories per day.
That takes the total weight loss advice which would suggest eating 1500 calories (or 3000 if you had taken out more calories than you already consumed) per day.
