That’s right – if you believe my first novel, which became a bestselling bookseller hit, and the hit movie, which became a blockbuster, it could have been the other way around.

This was the most magical experience of my life. It was like a magic incantation, a rite of passage.

To understand its significance let’s return to what it means to be alive…

I was alive in 1994, that’s when I first tried to write. I had graduated from university but had had no other experience in being a writer. I had just been introduced to the world of publishing when I was 20 – I had started writing a magazine article for the university paper. It was the first time I had ever had to write for something I didn’t particularly like. I wanted to keep on writing and, when it seemed like I had no future and no future money in me as I had a job in my university to pay the bills, I got stuck.

This was not a case of failing, this was a case of “I don’t think I’m good at writing”. To call it “writing for a job” is rather misusing the term.

The point is that in my case, being a writer meant that I had a job and had earned money. This meant that, over time, I had made things more enjoyable for me. It also meant that, over time, I’d developed skills that helped me earn my income and a degree to go with it.

A writer’s life starts with getting a degree!

Over the years, as I became more capable in writing, I felt frustrated as I had no place with books to write. I wanted a job as I had spent a lot of money on classes that I’d hated.
