Update 2018-06-06: While it’s still a great article, it is outdated for Windows 7, which includes many changes to cmdlet names. We strongly recommend using the Windows PowerShell 4.5, which brings improvements of numerous features to the cmdlets.

Summary

Windows PowerShell comes with a ton of built-in commands that users can use to perform tasks. As you start using a cmdlet or scripting language, it’s important to know your options. For Windows PowerShell, there are five main functions: commands, scripts, utilities, and tools.

The following list shows you what these five roles represent and where you might find them in Windows PowerShell:

Command

Command is the most common command, especially when you use it to find an answer to a question.

The most common command uses the -c switch: To run a cmdlet: Get-Command

To run a script: If-Matches -Path $Path -Match $Matches {$Script}

Utility

Utility commands have a list or object component that lets you perform operations on a certain set of files or folders that includes, for example, “Get-ChildItem” or “Get-ChildItem*”. By default, these are run directly from PowerShell, but you can change those settings (for instance, to run them on the local machine or on a remote machine) with the UseDefaultCommand parameter. The Get-Item cmdlet, for example, will automatically run the Get-ChildItem cmdlet on a remote machine.

A tools command typically has a “Get-Item” or “Get-ChildItem” element to list an item (usually an object) in the collection. By default, those items are run on the local machine. But,
