When should I Rehair my violin bow? – Coursera Violin Course

It is always recommended that whenever you rehair your violin bow that you do so after a couple of weeks as it will strengthen the bow.

A good rule of thumb is that if you are playing a major piece, you may want to use the rehair to the bow first and then re-hair the string on your instrument afterwards.

Do I need to rehair my bow when using a re-tape measure?

There are many manufacturers who use re-tapes to re-strengthen the bow.

If you are looking to re-strengthen the string on your instrument, be sure to purchase a re-tape measure that has the string as shown in the pictures below.

Remember to check the string at all times to ensure that all of the string is in place and if a piece is broken you should re-tape over the hole and re-string the piece.

Also, check to see that there is a “D” or a notch in the taper for the bow.

How many strings on my violin are I using and what kind of string should I use?

It depends on the manufacturer’s design and how the bow is used.

A bow has 3 types of strings used:

1. A thin and flexible 1/4″ string used for stringing a bow.

2. A fine point 2/8″ string used to make string wraps.

3. A fine point 3/16″ string used to make string rolls.

I have a few string kits on offer. What do I need to buy for my custom stringing.

Depending on the manufacturer, you may not need to buy any of the kit strings you see on the shelves as they are supplied by the manufacturer.

Just make sure to check the manufacturer’s website or order from your local violin shop.

I need a string tester. Do I need one?

In most cases there is no need for a string tester although we do think it is a great way to check the tone and feel of your instrument.
