A photo editing program is probably the most common tool that you are likely to use. We also need Photoshop to make the graphics shown here.
One more thing – Photoshop can also be programmed to “look like” you do. This is called a “photorealistic” effect. See more about this on our guide on how to enhance your photos.
What is Photoshop?
What you will see here is a photo shot on a mobile phone with an iPhone 4. In a word – it doesn’t look quite right. It looks pretty flat. Even more than in reality.
You should be able to see that the photo has been altered. In the image below you see that the “subject” has been distorted. In the right hand corner of the photo you can see how the picture was edited to make it look like you are looking down on the subject you shot the photo with. Note: some mobile phones are capable of processing a lower speed resolution.
The photo above was shot at 1/15th speed. You can see that the image has been heavily edited to make it look like the subject is facing up or up and down. What is more – the original photo is blurred to help the viewer make out the subject’s eyes in the blurry area.
We are all used to doing it at first sight. We need practice to get the hang of it. Once you are able to do it you can start enhancing your photos, it’s much easier than you might think.
What does “enhance” mean?
“Enhanced” photos means that you have made it look like you have taken the photo with a higher resolution. But this kind of editing can be quite difficult. What makes “enhanced” photos look nice is that the editing has been done to help the look of the object to be enhanced; the photographer used the perfect tool to make sure everything makes sense and doesn’t have too much noise.
Is the image realistic looking?
No photo editing software “likes” the realistic looking image. This is because an image can only be enhanced if it is realistic looking. That being said, there are some techniques for creating and enhancing photos with almost a realism and ease.

Photoshop has become such a popular tool for the pros because of its versatility and speed. As the use of the software by non-pros increases, that’s something you’ll be thankful for
