A team of researchers from University College London (UCL) have just published a paper detailing how they created an inexpensive and readily-available method for creating, recording and sharing music and sound using a single-electron device.
The method, which they called “MIDI Synthesis for Music,” or M.S.S. for short, consists of a combination of an acoustic transducer and an electromagnetic source used to amplify sound. It works by projecting an acoustic signal over the ambient noise level then amplifying the transducer using a very simple amplifier, which is just a resistor and capacitor placed together. This is a process which can be automated using software and is relatively inexpensive thanks to its only required components being a cheap, easily-possessable capacitor and a piece of paper and adhesive tape.
The paper was written in collaboration with a team at the Australian National University (ANU).
