The first few years of learning classical guitar are spent learning the chord diagrams, and building muscle memory for certain shapes and chords. I also work on my fingering for each chord. A good practice routine often takes months.
What do you take away from the lessons you’ve done?
I was able to take some really challenging ideas and use them to play the songs I’ve been working on in my free time. I’ve learned how to really feel the music on my instrument, making it feel more real and engaging. It’s good to find some people and go through this process of learning. This kind of learning allows you to improve your chops and also teach you how to create better music.
What is your next project after learning Classical guitar?
Currently learning jazz guitar. It’s nice to get out in the open for a bit.
Learn by doing. Read these articles to find out how to do that at home.
If you were a drummer, what kind of music would you play?
I love jazz and rock.
What do you like to do in the studio?
I like playing the new stuff for the first time for my own satisfaction. I don’t want to be making a record by the time I am ready to release it. The new stuff I love to play is just really good to listen to, and playing it live is really fun. Recording is really hard. It is a very stressful process for any musician. I think if I could just get people to listen and appreciate the new things more, it would be better. If I could just get people to be so good to me that I just couldn’t play this stuff anymore, it would be perfect.
Where can we find you at home?
The studio is located in the Bronx. I love living like this, living in the city to be able to perform every day.
What’s the best advice of your life?
The biggest one is to learn how to love your craft. I love working on music and this is a hard thing to do.
What is the coolest piece of equipment you own?
I’m still using my Roland Juno 100.
What is the weirdest thing that’s happened to you?
When I started learning, I got in this horrible car accident, which actually took out the front left wheel of my car.
And what’s the worst thing?
I actually have no idea.
