Did she take inspiration from the classic fashion? Or is it a modern interpretation? Is there a particular artist who inspired it? You could really tell what inspired it, as you will see in the pictures.
For this post, I have taken you back to when I was still new at fashion. I had not yet found my style.
I had just graduated from college and was about to get out of the business, when my first job as a model landed me in the top two in New York Fashion Week and got me a contract. And in the year since then, I have been fortunate to have worked with one of the top designers in the world including Rick Owens (who is also my favorite designer when it comes to flappers), Hedi Slimane, and Gianvito Rossi. I think it is safe to say that I have made a career out of flappers from the comfort of my own home. My husband and I have two boys, ages 3 and 4, and we adore flappers.
You will see the dress in the pictures up in the middle of the page. You will also see the original flapper dress, if you have it, and a couple pictures of its revival into more modern form. I did not want to use the original dress, because we had been getting tons of emails about that one. So I decided to recreate it from scratch. I knew I would make an adjustment and I am happy to say that in the process, I discovered something that I was totally happy with.
You will be able to purchase the flapper dress with the help of the wonderful designers at ModCloth!
The details behind the flapper dress
The flapper dress was the first thing they taught me, because it was the first thing I ever wore. I had just moved to New York as a new grad, I had no clue how to wear it. So I ended up making the bustline wider in the rear and the hemline slightly shorter in the front. A few people commented on how “ugly” I made the dress, which I felt was a compliment at that point. I was so surprised when one client commented, “this dress really makes you feel good.”
It was so amazing to meet and talk with other designers, and to see someone who I am very similar to, and not even realize it. It was such a wonderful experience!
For an original flapper dress, you will need:
