I can see why the flappers of the time were a little annoyed by their government when it sent troops to crush a rebellion. But they were also a bit annoyed by themselves: they believed it. If the rebellion was going down and you’re sitting there doing nothing about it, why the heck are you doing anything about it? It’s your choice as to how to react.
What advice would you give now, given the situation today in Syria?
I’d start by letting everyone know that not all freedom is a bad thing. That you can choose your government, but there is no way of knowing what the government will do.
But you don’t need to go to Russia, or to Egypt, or any of the other places, to get out of this mess. You can do it from your own backyard. We don’t have to go anywhere. We can come and go whenever we want. We don’t have to get involved and risk getting caught up in a civil war, or even being bombed. I’d encourage everybody to find out what your options are.
Do your own investigations. Make your own decisions.
If you’re a flapper, and you look around, what do you see? People have freedom, they choose to live their lives, they have their jobs. But they’re trapped by this horrible regime, with the government there doing all the terrible things. So you can say to yourself, “I want a different government. That’s OK.” But when it comes to what you’re doing for yourself and your families, how are you going to get out if you can’t go anywhere to get your freedom?
And, in the end, do you worry a little about getting killed in one of the many terrorist attacks that are going on in the world?
I worry about dying. I worry about dying every day. Of course I do. Who doesn’t? Everybody does. But I feel really lucky to be alive and not to have been killed, because I really didn’t want that to happen. I really wanted to let people know about what’s going on, and what we’re doing to stop it.
And people really do want to know about what’s going on. They want to know what’s happening and why, and how they can make a difference. But if you go ahead and keep hiding away from that, there’s no real way you’ll stop it. Even if we all started to open our doors, or if we all
