It can be a great way to spend a few hours each week, but this is not something for all. A film is a massive undertaking that requires a lot of skill, and sometimes it can be difficult to get into a position where you can commit to doing it. We do believe, though, that this is an incredible medium and it has the ability to push the boundaries of storytelling.
But is it enough to do the work, though? How much is the audience worth? To answer this question, we need to understand what the average cinema goer pays, what their spending habits are, and which mediums they tend to buy. The short answer to these questions is… well… pretty much the same as it ever was: very little.
As a medium, I am a little surprised that people still go to the cinema, in general, despite the fact that it is pretty much the worst way to spend an evening.
The short answer to this question is… well… pretty much the same as it ever was: very little. I haven’t counted all of the numbers in the last few years, but I have had a few people email me this year saying they were on their way to buying a ticket to the cinema this week, only to have the guy behind the counter say “No, there aren’t any tickets left”. Some have had the tickets on hand in case it drops, others have not had any left, but all of them have been either sitting in line or waiting for an empty one. In that respect… it’s still a fantastic medium, and one that many people value. But not even close to being something to be on the go for, which is why it’s a little surprising that this medium has not taken off. I do think it’s one of the best ways to consume cinema at the moment, with the ease of streaming it and the choice-oriented nature of DVD. This is not an easy thing for most people to do, but it is an amazing opportunity.
