First, you have to realize there’s a difference between having a dream and an idea. And the idea will be the big idea. You’ll know your idea is working, that you’ll get people interested in your film, that they’ll see yourself getting to work. But, that’s not the same thing as being able to execute your idea. There’s a different art of shooting a film. I’m still learning that.
I’m still learning. I have to get better at shooting. It’s the same process as filmmaking.
[Ed: It seems like a lot of filmmakers have a hard time getting the hang of shooting. And, a lot of the time, shooting feels like a waste of everyone’s time. It’s a strange and frustrating thing. We’re here to help you, so let’s talk about that.]
I think that’s the most common thing, is you’re trying to accomplish two things at once, you’re trying to achieve an idea, and then you’re thinking about how to create a shot. And the best way to learn how to execute a shot is to shoot a film. It’s not that simple. I’ll give you an example, I’ll write my own movie. One part happens to be, it happens to make people laugh. Another part happens to be interesting to me, and I’m thinking about how to create an interesting and funny moment in that scene. And the third part takes place around the same time. And that doesn’t mean we want to use that second part of the story. I don’t want to have it appear that way. But at least I’m aware of the fact that it can be used in a different way.
What are the challenges you are facing?
There are several challenges, for sure a lot. It’s the nature of a small studio. Everyone is a single person. I have an assistant who, even when we shoot a scene, we don’t work on every single single take because she has the schedule to stay. She has the schedule to come in if there is a problem. [Editor’s note: The same is true of many editors, who tend to work as a group so that they will have a larger number of opportunities to show off their skills before they start making films.] And I have an assistant who has been working there for eight years, but she’s been at the studio for only two years. So she’s not a lot of help. But she is smart and experienced and has a job
