Well, now you do.
Last summer, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst introduced its graduate degree in film and media studies program. With degrees ranging from BFA to master’s, you can combine animation and storytelling with classes with a major in film production and distribution.
Some students can pursue a degree in film and media studies and take classes in film as a career. Others, however, can pursue a degree purely for fun—and a little money.
The class at UMass Amherst is called The School of the Masses, and it is open to the public. There are stipends available to students and faculty, but they provide a limited stipend to offset class fees. Students can expect to make around $10,000 during their time at UMass Amherst’s school, says UMass Amherst media studies faculty member Brian Davis. As they say, “They don’t ask you to do a lot, but they will expect you to do some.”
It’s a common misconception that students of film and media studies are only interested in film. While film is a major topic of study at UMass Amherst, its Department of Film, Media and Television is the only film school at the university. A number of media studies professors at the school hold other jobs, such as instructional designers or teaching assistants.
In fact, students of film and media studies at UMass Amherst come from all walks of life: they work in film departments at Boston University, Northeastern University, Brown University and Tufts University, as well as animation and digital animation programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“I think there’s a huge amount of interest in film and in media and in interactive media, including digital,” Davis said.
The field of media studies allows the students to apply the skills they’ve gained from film production or digital animation to other media fields. For instance, computer games are a popular field of study and students can study it for a summer. It also allows the students the opportunity to earn money for school.
Students can take classes on the video game industry, such as games programming and business analytics. Students also can find jobs in film production. They can become a storyboard artist or a sound editor, or work for a movie studio.
“There are a lot of ways to work and study and make money in media,” Davis said. “For one, there’s the entertainment industry. The other thing is there’s video games
