What are the skills that make a good director?

There is much competition in this field, but not all directors are the same – there are a few basic traits you need to develop to become one. They are:

1. Attention to detail

You’ll have to keep an eye on everything that is created, even if it is not your job. You’ll see everything: your script, your locations, your casting, your set, your camera, your lights, your audio and the many other elements of shooting on film. This is what will give you an advantage over most others. You will also need to have excellent attention to detail, because at some point, you will have to tell a story and you might be working on a project that is already too complicated. You’re going to need to focus your attention on one aspect at a time and work hard to do it. Also learn how to do more than the simplest things – make your own costumes, make your own props, get the best and most professional set.

2. Empathy

There is some research out there that suggests that an ability to show empathy towards other people results in a greater likelihood of winning awards than an ability to show empathy towards self. This means that if you can show empathy towards others, you’ll be more likely to be selected for film school, because that’s where you can learn. But only by being able to show empathy. That goes for you as well. Some directors do not have empathy, but some can be very empathetic.

3. Talent

Just like film school gives you a better grasp of basic skills then going to film school won’t make you a better filmmaker. But you do, on the other hand, have talent that should make you stand out. That’s a skill that will allow
