I draw him from the perspective of being an asshole. When I first saw him I thought, “Damn, I’ve got to take every opportunity to make him an asshole.” But then, over time, I found ways to draw him in a way that I thought would make him easier to draw. So if he’s on the front or back of a truck, I draw the right side of the truck in front of him. If there’s a tree in the background, I use that to create the background on his face. I usually also sketch out the characters with their faces down to some degree and then I get them back up and do it again and again. It doesn’t take as long to draw him.
Can you talk a little about the process of getting Deadpool’s skin color on the cover?
It’s an important process because a lot of these guys, like Frank Miller’s Daredevil or Frank Frazetta’s The Skull, or Scott McCloud and Jeph Loeb’s Astonishing X-Men—those guys, they get it exactly right. I always knew that I wanted to draw every character from the perspective of a guy who is an asshole or a jerk. This was going to be my take on the character when I was writing the book. So I wrote the script and I drew it and I had to make it to the point where I felt confident in saying, “I want this to feel like an asshole.” This was before I had an opinion on what Deadpool should look like but I was just like “I’m never going to be able to be right.” [Laughs.] That was what I was trying to keep in mind when I drew him.
It’s just one of those things. He’s an asshole. I think a lot of people think when they see him with Wolverine that it’s going to be funny. It’s always something that’s going to be funny. I just thought it would be funny if he wasn’t all that great of a friend and he wasn’t the greatest guy on the outside.
I’ve seen different interviews with writer Mark Waid where he said, “I do that for the
