“First of all, we want them to be tall, we want to make sure they’re in character. Because as soon as you take off the glasses, they’re just trying to look normal, like they belong in the real world.
“You have to keep in mind – and I always keep in mind when we do this – every single picture has a human factor in it. That’s the beauty of it. If you paint a kid and you put his ears on a helmet, that’s what he looks like.
“As long as you make this person look real, you’re really doing him a huge favour.”
Do the pictures look like the actor he’s starring in?
Dyer, 39, is playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the latest Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer. But the role that gives him his biggest challenge to date – to give the impression of the billionaire entrepreneur who created the world’s first space rocket in the 1950s – is being played by Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark in the upcoming movie.
“Yeah, I haven’t done a whole lot of acting and don’t play a lot of roles where I don’t need to look exactly the way the person I’m playing, so if any part felt too large, I wanted to try something smaller,” he says, laughing.
“I’ve never done anything where I’ve been like, ‘I’m gonna look like this, no, I’m gonna look really different than that’, because I have to look really different. I always feel more comfortable if a director puts me completely at ease. That just takes me a lot of confidence to be like, ‘OK, now it doesn’t feel like I’m not real’.”

After graduating from California’s San Diego State University with a degree in fashion, Dyer moved to London to study film and television at the School of Visual Arts, working on a film called The Golden Age in a year that would result in a breakthrough role in one of the industry’s big blockbusters, Doctor Who in 1996. He was also approached by HBO about a series for their drama Silicon Valley but the network had no intention of filming it.
