I think it’s all about posture. You can move all kinds of muscles, all the way down to your elbows and shoulders, and a person can still look natural. You can draw up your chest to keep things clear, but when you start working on the legs, you start to get more realistic, so I’d say that’s your key.
How do you go about writing a character from a character’s point of view?
Well, I think character is always about viewpoint. What you do is you make a choice when you’re making the drawing. When you’re drawing a character, you don’t have a choice. You create your choice in your mind. You just go ahead and draw what you want. And then you write what you write. The character is the story. It’s just a choice you have to make.
What about when a character’s just an “unreal” depiction of reality? Does that make for better character development?
[Laughs] Well, it depends. If you create a human for the artist, then you’re basically doing a painting of the kind of individual who is living in that person’s world, and it might not be the greatest. With the exception of maybe certain aspects that are realistic like hair, you want the drawing to have a real feeling that is going to reflect whatever you’ve said or done. But that doesn’t seem to be very easy.
There is some truth in this. As someone who is not an artist, I can tell you the hardest thing was not writing a character, but writing somebody. That’s been the hardest part. The easiest way to write a character is to have somebody who can talk about their life, and you can tell the details of their life, and tell the details of their environment. And then you can write about the consequences of that, and how they have moved on and how they had that feeling in the past. But those are the easiest characters to write.
What is your secret?
[Laughs] I would say the key, for me is to tell good stories, and let people know the things that happened that make it easier to understand what’s going on. It doesn’t have to be about a lot of different things. You can explain what a character is feeling, or what he’s seeing or how the characters are reacting to each other. If I could be more specific about it, I’d say the secret is to let people know what’s going to happen. You don’t
