“I have always been an animal lover. They’re a really fascinating animal. They’re very much a wild beast.” (I love this, don’t you? I love that they “are not like human pets.”)
I have always been a fan of the way I’d have drawn the llama’s face. If you look very closely you can see that I tried to imagine that it might be smiling when in fact I just made that up as I was drawing it.
The llama is one of those monsters that you can pick up in a zoo, or a zoo in a zoo. People get excited about them, the animals know me. They’re so easy to use in comics. They don’t have to be really realistic; they’re just really funny.
“I think the most accurate image you can take or photograph is the face.” -Mike Mignola
It is a good sign when you get an interview with a creator and he seems to have no interest in anything except his story. It’s a great relief when he gets to talk about the art in his comic. Here’s what he’s said about the art process of his comic “Hellboy in Hell” which is drawing a bunch of monsters in the same place, one by one.
I don’t have a pencil on the first line of the book. The first line begins on the back. I have my hands on the pencils with no pencil. That first panel is done with black pencil for me. Then it becomes clear to me, because I have a nice little brush, what colors are going to go on the back of the paper. I have an entire bunch of colors. It might be orange, orange is my favorite color, but you get an idea when you see what’s going on here. You don’t see that, but they’re going to have orange and black on one side—that’s going to be their skin tone.
What I’ve done so far in drawing the hellboy story is not realistic so that wasn’t my goal. What I did want to do was have it look like this—at least in my mind. My goal was to have characters come in and have a good story. I think that’s the only way we can keep making comics. That’s the only way to make a living doing it. The way the industry, the comics industry, is run now. You never know when you’re going to get a break, and
