The US government is considering expanding its spy operation in Latin America to capture and prosecute a network of drug trafficking organizations and gangs, according to news reports.
The Obama administration is reportedly planning to establish a drug unit in Mexico along with more operations inside the US.
These are the first suggestions of an expanded US intelligence surveillance program following recent revelations.
The US and Latin American nations have been alarmed by the spread of the illegal drug cartels, which are profiting from the illegal sale of opium, heroin and methamphetamine in the region.
The White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy also revealed last month that the drug war is now responsible for more deaths than all other forms of violence combined. The US government spends more than $500m every year on combating drugs.
At the same time, however, the US government has been unable to stop the flow of profits in illegal drugs to Latin America.
A spokesman for the Latin American office of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Juan Carlos Hernandez, said: “As of today, the number of homicides and robberies in Latin American is about 10 times higher than at any time in the last decade. The increased profits in the lucrative illicit drug trade contribute to the increased violence and instability in places like Mexico and Central America.”
The federal government’s top trade official, former Canadian ambassador to the United States David MacNaughton, is to speak on free trade from the left wing of the party, the Canadian Press reports.
